LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. – Miller Geer & Associates, Inc., a boutique public relations firm serving national clients, celebrates its 50 ^th anniversary this November 2025. The agency serves a variety of local, regional and national clients in health care, higher education, county and city government, logistics and transportation as well as animal welfare.

Jay Geer, president of the eight-person agency, joined the agency in 1982 as an intern and subsequently purchased the firm from its founder, Nann Miller, in 1991. Nann Miller, APR, Fellow, started the agency in 1975 and created one of the first public relations agencies owned and operated by a woman in Los Angeles.

In the agency’s early years, clients included real estate development, animal welfare and hospitality. The agency would become known as the creator of many special events, including spectaculars that lead to acknowledgment in the Guiness Book of Records. Those events included the “Big Picture,” the downtown Los Angeles celebration of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, the world’s largest ribbon cutting for Shoreline Village in Long Beach and the world’s largest Ice Cream Float for Knudson Ice Cream.

“Our founder, Nann, knew that a great, larger than life idea that perfectly underscored the brand and carried news value would generate buzz,” says Geer. “Her ideation, creativity and execution of earned media public relations campaigns remain in the DNA of the firm today.”

Agency vice-presidents James Chisum and Sandy Rodriguez started their careers as college interns with Miller Geer & Associates and now more than 15 years later serve in leadership roles.

Founded in downtown Los Angeles, the firm relocated to Orange County in 1995 and is based in Los Alamitos. The firm has won more than 60 industry awards for campaigns and is noted for its media relations and crisis communications expertise.

LA Care Invest $5.4 Million to Address CalFresh Funding Shortfall

L.A. Care will provide up to $5 million to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, and Food Forward, a nonprofit organization that distributes fresh surplus fruits and vegetables.

As the ongoing federal government shutdown approaches its one-month mark, individuals and families who rely on CalFresh, California's Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP), for assistance to purchase groceries may not receive their monthly assistance during the month of November. L.A. Care is investing $5.4 million to help address CalFresh funding shortfall.

PVHMC offers $50 mammograms every April and October to improve access to breast cancer screening by removing the financial barrier.

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) offered $50 mammograms without a physician order or proof of insurance during Breast Cancer Awareness Month for women who met specific requirements. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation , 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. PVHMC is also one of the only hospitals in the region to offer the SmartCurve™ breast stabilization system , which is clinically proven to deliver a more comfortable mammogram.

Laguna College of Art + Design Broke Ground on new Campus and Unveiled Anonymous Donor who is Central to the School’s Major Development

Laguna College of Art + Design (LCAD), one of the nation’s leading visual and applied arts colleges, broke ground on its first phase of campus consolidation to build a two-story 22,000 sq. ft Innovation Center, which will serve as the centerpiece of the new campus. During the event, LCAD also introduced the donor, who had remained anonymous, and helped make the major development possible. The construction is anticipated to be completed by 2028.

The groundbreaking event featured a live exhibition space with artwork from students, live music, and large screens with presentations of what the new campus will look like.

A new study from Common Sense Media found that more than 70% of teens have used AI companions and half use them regularly. CHOC Hosts Hot Car Child Safety Demo as Temperatures Rise

As the summer heat hits Southern California, experts at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) want to warn parents to never leave their children alone in hot cars, as heat stroke is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths in children under 15-years-old. According to the National Safety Council, 14 hot car deaths have been reported in 2025.

As heat-related deaths are 100% preventable, CHOC community health educators and pediatricians demonstrated strategies to help parents remember to take their children out of the car.

Pasadena Humane Provides Lifesaving Support During the Eaton Fire

In early January, the Eaton Fire ravaged the Altadena and Pasadena area, leading to widespread evacuations and significant challenges for both residents and their pets. Since the crisis began, Pasadena Humane has been providing critical support to pets and their owners, taking in more than 900 animals. The shelter’s ICU has treated animals suffering from burns, dehydration and smoke inhalation.

Thanks to the dedicated staff and volunteers at Pasadena Humane, countless pets have been safely returned to their families.

According to the Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer, a child is injured or killed from gun violence every 30 hours in L.A. County. Just in 2022, more than 500 people died after being shot with a gun. With gun shot wounds up, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) will distribute free gun locks to the public with no questions asked. The public can pick up the gun locks from a distribution box inside of the hospital’s emergency room 24/7. PVHMC is among a handful of local hospitals to receive free gun locks from the Los Angeles County Office of Violence Prevention in efforts to reduce accidental gunshot wounds and deaths.

To introduce the program to the public, PVHMC partnered with the Pomona Police Department to demonstrate how to use the steel cable gun locks. PVHMC Medical Director of Trauma Services Michael Jimenez M.D. demonstrated ‘Stop the Bleed’ techniques to teach the public how to stop major hemorrhaging with tourniquets and properly applied pressure until first responders arrive.

PVHMC Trauma Services averages about 12 patients a year with accidental injuries from a firearm with the average of patients ranging from ages 2 – 58.

According to the Pew Research Center, 8.5 million Latinos are eligible to vote in California, more than any other state in the country. In 2020, 53% of eligible Latino voters voted in the presidential election. AltaMed Health Services’ My Vote. My Health., a nonpartisan initiative aims to increase voter turnout in underserved communities and promote civic engagement to Latino communities. To make voting more accessible, AltaMed regularly partners with the L.A. County Registrar Recorder to bring Flex Voting Centers to its health clinics. Over the course of two weeks, AltaMed, one of the nation’s largest federally qualified community health centers, offered 15 early voting locations for the community

Days before the election, Dean C. Logan, Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, Julián Castro, the current Chief Executive Officer of the Latino Community Foundation, and former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and other community partners gathered at AltaMed South Gate and urged voters to head to the polls.

Overdose Awareness Week seeks to bring attention to the more than 100,000 lives lost every year in the U.S. to drug overdoses. The CDC has reported that for the first time in ten years, the number of fatal overdoses has not increased and is holding steady. This month, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) installed a Naloxone Distribution Box outside of its emergency department with free Naloxone and Fentanyl test strip kits to anyone who needs them, with no questions asked. PVHMC is one of the few hospitals in the area with a Naloxone Distribution Box.

PVHMC Substance Use Nurse Navigator Sherrie Cisneros, RN, demonstrated how to use Naloxone nasal spray for media outlets.

L.A. Care Health Plan and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan gave away 18,000 backpacks this summer at their Back-to-School events throughout L.A. County. The free backpacks were filled with school supplies such as notebooks, pens and pencils and helped families who might find it hard to buy the supplies on their own. In addition to free backpacks, each event offered unique activities such as wall climbing, face painting, obstacle courses, food pantries, children’s health screenings and vaccinations.

With the CDC reporting that drowning rates among children ages 1-4 are 28% higher in 2021 and 2022 than in 2019, Dr. Michael Jimenez, trauma center medical director at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center shared swim safety tips and demonstrated hands-only CPR, and showed how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). According to the CDC drowning is the number one cause of preventable deaths among babies and toddlers.

CalOptima Health, OC's largest Health insurance, Expands Street Medicine Program to Anaheim and Costa Mesa

CalOptima Health, the largest health insurer in Orange County, is expanding their street medicine program in partnership with Healthcare in Action. CalOptima is investing $5 million for a two-year expansion of the program into Anaheim and Costa Mesa in August. The first-of-its-kind program in Orange County, which launched in Garden Grove last April, is designed to improve health outcomes by connecting primary care providers with individuals experiencing homelessness to build long-term relationships that ultimately result in secure housing. The mobile doctor’s office will canvas the Anaheim and Costa Mesa community to reach individuals living in parks, under freeways or other unsheltered spaces. Services will include primary care, behavioral health and case management and whole-person care.

Kelly Bruno-Nelson, MediCal Executive Director with CalOptima Health, spoke to CBS and said the program is "for individuals who are ready to take the next step in their housing journey to take them literally from street to home."

Teach Democracy Hosts 43rd Annual California Mock Trial Finals

Teach Democracy , formerly known as the Constitutional Rights Foundation, a Los Angeles-based non-profit that provides nonpartisan civic education through interactive programs for youth, hosted its 2024 California Mock Trial Finals at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Los Angeles. This year’s state finals welcomed 550 students from 32 high school teams from 31 counties in California to argue the fictitious murder case of People v. Clark, in which a CEO of a company is murdered after an IPO goes awry. Hundreds of parents, teachers, and coaches joined the competitors in the courtroom galleries to watch students argue the case in front of real judges. Trinity Pacific Christian School from Woodland Hills in Ventura County won the state finals and will represent California at the 2024 National High School Mock Trial Competition in Wilmington, Delaware in May.

“Mock trial is a program that provides a valuable experience in learning about the U.S judicial system and helps young people get civically engaged,” said Lourdes Morales, senior program director at Teach Democracy. “Students who participate in Mock Trial develop critical thinking skills, strengthen their public speaking abilities and gain confidence that impacts their educational and personal growth.”

My Health. campaign to provide flex and mobile vote centers at AltaMed clinics throughout Los Angeles County. AltaMed expanded its non-partisan My. Vote. My Health program statewide with the California Primary Care Association to improve voter turnout among Latinos ahead of the 2024 election. AltaMed hosted 15 vote centers and 1 ballot drop box where patients, providers, staff, and members of surrounding communities could cast or drop off their ballot via a secure county drop box at their local, trusted AltaMed clinic.

My Health. is a campaign led by AltaMed Health Services , one of the nation’s largest federally qualified community health centers, to mobilize patients, families and residents in our Southern California service areas to address the social and political determinants of health. Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Orange is raising awareness of the need for registered organ donors in the Latino community during National Hispanic Heritage Month. According to Salud America , there is a significant gap between the number of Latino organ donors and the number of Latinos in need of life-saving organ transplants.

To highlight the importance of donors, Providence St. Joseph Hospital is sharing the story of 49- year-old Efren Carranza, a kidney transplant recipient who was on his way to Mexico to celebrate Mexican Independence Day with his family when he got a call that would change his life – a call that he’d been waiting for, for years.

Diana Pena, a junior at Downtown Magnets High School in Los Angeles will be the first in her family to attend college thanks to the Constitutional Rights Foundation Expanding Horizons Institute (EHI) program. The free four-month program helps first-generation Los Angeles high school students gain skill development and personal growth that prepares them for college, career, and civic life.

This year’s 28th EHI welcomed 27 high-achieving juniors and sophomores from high schools throughout Los Angeles to attend interactive weekly seminars and participate in paid summer internships. Since 1995, EHI has brought the program to more than 1,900 first-generation, college-bound high school students throughout Los Angeles.

Torrance Memorial Medical Center Nurse Navigator Celebrates at the 11th Annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness Run

Torrance Memorial Medical Center breast cancer nurse navigator Evelyn Calip was joined by more than 1,100 people for the 11th annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Run at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa Del Rey. The event celebrated Calip’s 15th year of being breast cancer free. Calip was impressed with the cancer care that she received at Torrance Memorial Medical Center that she joined the hospital as a breast cancer nurse navigator after her recovery. She started the BRA Run in 2013 to support breast cancer patients, survivors and their families.

The event offered a run/walk 5K, 15K and a 14-mile bike ride. Runners and walkers wore decorated bras to spread awareness and to honor those diagnosed with breast cancer. Proceeds will provide financial support for underinsured women to help pay for insurance deductibles and breast reconstruction surgery

Care Health Plan and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan hosted 11 back-to-school events throughout Los Angeles County this summer to help families ease the financial stressors of sending their children back to school. As part of their annual back-to-school event, L.A. Care and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan gave away 16,500 backpacks. Each Community Resource Center distributed 1,500 backpacks with free school supplies. Families received a wide range of education and social assistance resources from participating community-based organizations, including free food.

The quinceañeras, all 55 years of age or older, never had an opportunity to celebrate this joyous occasion. A priest provided a blessing, which was followed by a celebration with music, dancing, and cake. For more than 25 years AltaMed PACE has provided the health and social services necessary to help seniors live independently in their communities. AltaMed has 11 PACE site locations that serve more than 4,500 seniors in 60 cities throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties.

The survey focused on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurse satisfaction, mental health, and well-being, along with insight on the need for comprehensive, multisectoral solutions to the challenges facing nursing.

New data from AMN Healthcare shares that 9 in 10 nurses say the nursing shortage is worse than five years ago, and the increase in patient demand has overwhelmed many hospitals and healthcare workers.

Hosted by the Constitutional Rights Foundation, the Civic Action Project is offered to 200,000 high school and middle students across the nation. The CAP Expo, held at the California Endowment, was the students culminating event that showcased presentations on topics such as L.A. street vendor support, mental health, gender equality, homelessness, affordable housing, and more. The annual CAP projects teach students how to become civically engaged citizens who understand the process of working with elected officials to advocate for change in their communities.

San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Begins Springtime Harvest of Sacred Yucca Plant

Springtime means harvest time for the yucca plant, which is an age-old tradition for the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians (SMBMI). The yucca is used as a food source, and also to make rope, twine and soap. But climate change is threatening their ancient tradition.

As climate patterns change, so does the harvest season. The SMBMI is a federally-recognized Indian tribe located on the San Manuel Indian Reservation near Highland, California. San Manuel exercises its inherent sovereign right of self-governance and provides essential services for its citizens by building infrastructure, maintaining civil services, and promoting social, economic and cultural development. As the Indigenous people of San Bernardino, the Serrano people of San Manuel have called this area home since time immemorial and are committed to remaining a productive partner in the San Bernardino region.

After Three Months, 7-Year-Old Burn Survivor from Oxnard Christmas Day Fire Leaves Torrance Memorial Burn Unit

On Christmas Day last year, an Oxnard house fire killed 7-year-old Gladys Solis’ father, and critically injured her mother and 10-year-old brother. Since the tragedy, Gladys and her mother have been patients at Torrance Memorial Medical Center Burn Center. Now, after more than three months, Gladys went home and doctors, nurses and staff of the hospital’s burn unit team celebrated her amazing recovery.

“When Gladys arrived, she was so severely burned we didn’t know if she’d survive,” said Vimal Murthy, M.D., Torrance Memorial Medical Center burn and wound surgeon. “Gladys received weeks of live-saving treatment, including the psychological support to help her deal with her severe injuries.”

Uninjured Jorge Ramirez, the oldest child in the family, was faced with managing the care of his mother and siblings. The 22-year-old has been bedside with family members throughout the entire ordeal.

Constitutional Rights Foundation Hosted Mock Trail State Finals for the First Time in 60 Years in Los Angeles Courthouse

The Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF), a Los Angeles-based non-profit, that provides nonpartisan civic education through interactive programs for youth, hosted its 2023 California Mock Trial Finals at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Los Angeles. This year’s state finals welcomed the top 600 high school students from 34 counties in California to argue the case of People v. Franks, a criminal case involving robbery and battery. Hundreds of parents, teachers, and coaches joined the competitors in the courtroom galleries. Menlo School from San Mateo County placed first in the state finals and will represent California at the National Competition in Little Rock, Arkansas in May.

L.A. Care Health Plan Partners with Health Net to Offer Free Access to Mental Health Services to L.A. County Public Schools

L.A. Care Health Plan is partnering with Health Net, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health to offer free mental health services for K-12 students in L.A. County public schools by allocating $24 million to cover the service over two years.

According to the 2022 California Health Care Almanac , 1 in 14 children has an emotional disturbance that limits functioning in family, school, or community activities. Between 2019 and 2020, suicide rates among kids aged 10-18 increased by 20 percent.

“L.A. Care saw an opportunity to support the mental health needs of members and students by leveraging telehealth to improve access to prompt evaluation and treatment. We believe this initiative will provide an accessible, expandable, and sustainable model to bring mental health treatment to students across L.A. County,” said John Baackes, L.A. Care CEO.

Chino Valley Fire District first responders demonstrated CPR techniques last week at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center

In commemoration of American Heart Month, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center and the Chino Valley Fire District (CVFD) hosted a CPR demo last week. The demonstration taught first-hand CPR training to resuscitate and stabilize a victim until health professionals arrive. The CVFD has seen a consistent improvement each year since the initiative began. From 2018 to 2021, its survival rates increased from 16.7% to 62.5%, while state and national averages have remained relatively flat, under 30% (according to Utstein criteria*).

Each year, more than 350,000 EMS-assessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. According to the American Heart Association , about 90% of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Offers $50 Mammograms Throughout October in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The Robert and Beverly Lewis Family Cancer Care Center at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) is providing low-cost 3D mammograms for $50 throughout the month of October with no doctor’s orders or insurance required. Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center kicked off this initiative last weekend with its ‘Mamos and Mimosas’ event which offered mammograms, mimosas, special gifts, and health education. More than 70 women participated in the event.

Breast cancer is a devastating disease and the second most common cancer among women. According to the American Cancer Society , 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. Thanks to increases in early detection and more effective treatments, the breast cancer mortality rate (deaths per 1,000 diagnosed) has decreased by 41 percent since 1989. It’s vital that testing, detection, and diagnosis are available for at-risk women and provide treatment and successful health outcomes.

Providence Announced a $712M Medical Expansion in South Orange County

Providence announced it will invest $712 million in the region to build two new multi-specialty medical centers, and a new patient care tower at Providence Mission Hospital as they expand access to care in the south Orange County.

As community needs grow in demand, the two new centers in Rancho Mission Viejo and San Clemente will provide urgent care services staffed by emergency medicine physicians, a full-service imaging center with advanced diagnostics, and a multi-specialty clinic with primary care physicians, OB/GYNs and other specialty care providers.

According to the official California COVID-19 website, 72.3% of residents are vaccinated, with 58.7% boosted as of late last month.

After Another Chance at Life, Young Motorcyclist Reunites with the Healthcare Team Who Saved His Life at Pomona Valley Medical Center

24-year-old Victor Ramirez is alive and thriving after suffering severe head trauma from a motorcycle accident that almost took his life.

In June of 2021, Victor's heart stopped in the ambulance for several minutes until paramedics were able to revive him and rushed him to the Level II trauma center at the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) after a motorcycle accident. With immediate critical care on a 24-hour basis, Victor was in good hands, doctors and nurses at PVHMC were able to stabilize Victor, and his road to recovery began. After more than five weeks, Victor regained consciousness and spent months relearning to walk and regain his strength.

Now active and well, Victor returned to PVHMC to thank the doctors and nurses who saved his life.

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Nurses Share Story of Son's Near Drowning

Other than birth defects, drowning is the most frequent cause of death in children between one and four years of age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s the summer season and parents need to be extra mindful of young children near swimming pools.

In February, husband and wife nursing couple, Mike and Hilary Zunde, faced their worst nightmare. Hilary had gone inside the house to put a band-aid on her three-year-old and thought her 18-month-old-son Zachary was right behind her. After a frantic search, she was horrified to find him floating face down in their spa.

Zack was a fighter and recovered quickly, spending just two nights in the hospital. His recovery was full and miraculous. The Zundes can’t stress water safety enough.

La Costa Glen, a continuing care retirement community in Carlsbad, made its’ residents’ bucket list wishes come true. This time they provided “dream flights” for its’ residents, including 94-year-old Dolores Conti, who was flying in honor of her late WWII-veteran husband.

The dream flight participants included senior veterans ranging in ages from 75 to 94 from the Army, Navy and Marines.

Dream Flights, a non-profit aviation company provided the thrill rides for the vets, landed in Oceanside to honor La Costa Glen veterans with flights in a restored World War II-era biplane. During the 20-minute flight, passengers experienced the freedom and exhilaration of soaring 1,000 feet in the air.

Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia visited AltaMed Health Services Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in Long Beach to learn how the program is keeping local seniors out of nursing homes. During Mayor Garcia’s visit, PACE participants engaged in an art workshop with local artist Aydee Lopez Martinez , he toured the facility, and spoke with seniors.

AltaMed PACE helps participants avoid nursing homes by receiving highly coordinated health and social services necessary to help them live safely and independently in their own home. AltaMed PACE provides its participants with comprehensive health, dental and behavioral health services. It also provides transportation to medical appointments, social services, meals, and social activities at its centers that focus on connectivity.

Research has shown that PACE programs reduce hospitalization , emergency room visits and nursing home stays. Participants survive longer than similar patients in less comprehensive programs. According to the National PACE Association , COVID deaths among PACE participants have been about one-third those of nursing home residents.

AltaMed Foundation Youth Champions Program Helps South Central Los Angeles Teen get Accepted to Dartmouth College

The first in her family to go to college, Giselle Curiel, 18, of South Central Los Angeles, and a senior at Huntington Park Institute of Applied Medicine (HPIAM), was accepted to Dartmouth College with the help of AltaMed's Foundation Youth Champions Program.

When she was six years old, her mother suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed. During this time, Giselle found herself fascinated by the medical equipment in the hospital. Giselle plans to study neuroscience with the goal of becoming a doctor.

During her senior year of high school, Giselle joined Youth Champions, a mentoring program from the AltaMed Foundation, which empowers youth in underserved communities to learn skills in leadership, communication, financial literacy, goal-setting, problem-solving and grit.

The AltaMed Youth Champions program is free and gives students an opportunity to earn as through project-based learning. The Youth Champions after-school workshops introduced Giselle to a multitude of professionals in education, engineering, science, medicine, and more. It gave her unique opportunities to network with professionals who grew up in the communities the program serves.

Ultimately after completing her education, Giselle aims to return to Los Angeles as a physician and researcher to provide care to underserved communities.

Care Health Plan and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan are holding Back-to-School Drive-Thru events for families in the community. At each event, the health plans will distribute 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies. Local nonprofit Access Books will also distribute 100 tote bags stuffed with three children’s books featuring positive, uplifting stories to help young readers cope with the stresses caused by the pandemic.

By 2030 about 1 in every 5 Californians will be 65 or older and will require some assistance with self-care. The current system relies heavily on unpaid family caregivers to meet the needs of people outside of medical settings. Families in California are often dependent on two incomes and there are fewer available family caregivers to step in to help. AltaMed Health Services’s Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) is helping to fill that gap for low-income individuals 55 and older with health needs in Los Angeles County.

Next year Los Angeles County residents will cast ballots under a new model and at new locations for in-person voting. The Los Angeles County Registrar selected AltaMed Health Services to be 1 of 10 sites to demo the new technology “Voting Solutions for All People” (VSAP). Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan and Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis joined AltaMed at its medical center in Commerce to demo the new voting system.

Thousands Participate in 21st Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk Fundraiser for Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA

Hundreds of pups and animal lovers took over Pasadena at the 21st annual Wiggle Waggle Walk fundraiser supporting the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. The event also hosted demonstrations, food trucks, music, and other vendors helping to support the cause. The money raised helps to provide food, shelter, veterinary care and more to the thousands of animals the humane society cares for every year.

Hoag Orthopedic Institute Surgeon Performs Rare Severed Spine Surgery Through Patient’s Mouth

An initial surgery left her with a cock robin orientation and in immense pain. Torrance Memorial Medical Center is the First Hospital in LA County to Install CertaScan

Torrance Memorial Medical Center is the first hospital in Los Angeles County to use CertaScan Technologies, an innovative newborn biometric identification system. CertaScan provides added safety and security to newborns by digitally capturing high resolution footprints which can be used for precise identification in situations like abductions, lost or abandoned babies, or natural disasters. The system also takes security photos, a critical component of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s (NCMEC’s) Guidelines.

The system is completely safe for use on babies and mom is engaged in the process when she receives a newborn footprint certificate in the hospital. When she returns home, she can download a copy of her baby’s footprint and enhance it with different colors, fonts and borders. These benefits are provided free to moms – compliments of the hospital.

AltaMed Health Careers Opportunity Program Aims to Reduce the California Physician Shortage

AltaMed Health Services , one of the nation’s largest federally qualified community health centers, has partnered with Charles Drew University to launch the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) which prepares undergraduate students to enter health professions. Students learn how to administer injections and prepare IVs as a practical exercise during the six-week curriculum. The program provides pre-med students onsite learning in a community-based health care center, professional networking and research opportunities.

A recent UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Initiative study found California has the lowest rate of Latino physicians in the nation. More Latinos live in California than in any other state in the nation, according to the Pew Research Institute . The report cites that the shortage is partly due to U.S. medical schools admitting very few Latino students. Increasing medical school admissions for Latino students will reduce language barriers and healthcare disparities among the growing Latino population. AltaMed’s HCOP program is in accordance with the study’s findings that the number of California primary care residency slots should be expanded to training opportunities in state hospitals and community clinics of medically and linguistically underserved communities.

Torrance Memorial Burn Survivor Shares Message About The Proper Use of Space Heaters

Shannon Collins, 21, of Torrance, California, who lived through a deadly fire when she was a child is now spreading awareness on how to properly use space heaters. The burn survivor hugged Torrance Memorial Medical Center nurses and one of the doctors who took care of her for nearly two months while she was being treated at Torrance Memorial Burn Center.

In 2006, Collins and 12 other family members spent Christmas at their grandparents’ house. A space heater, which later would be determined as the cause of the fire, was left on in the living room over night. While many were able to escape the fire uninjured, Collins suffered burns to her right arm and escaped by jumping through a window. Due to the burn injuries, she was hospitalized for over a month.

Dodgers Pitcher Kenley Jansen Pays Surprise Visit to Torrance Memorial Medical Center

Torrance Memorial Medical Center patients received a surprise visit from Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, Kenley Jansen this past weekend. Jansen delivered holiday cheer and signed Dodgers gear to cancer, cardiac and pediatric patients. Jansen’s son was born at the hospital earlier this year.

“I know how much it means to just come and be around kids, especially when they are going through times to make it easier for them,” said Jansen.

AltaMed PACE Art Therapy Helps Seniors Brush Up on Better Health

Each week, seniors brush away stress and ailments with a dose of art therapy taught by world-renowned Chicana artist Yolanda Gonzalez. A native Angeleno, Gonzalez lends her talents to teach seniors in AltaMed Health Services’ Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) how to paint and create their own ceramic masterpieces.

For seniors, art therapy can also help restore functioning and a general sense of well-being. According to the American Art Therapy Association, 78% of art therapists report working with older adults on a regular basis. For seniors who are managing daily pain from chronic conditions or even those suffering from memory loss due to dementia, art therapy helps sharpen the mind while also promoting dexterity. Additionally, many art therapy programs are conducted in a social atmosphere, which allows seniors a chance to continue to build connections and relationships with others.
